Yesterday I found Panko Breadcrumbs in the supermarket! This was exciting stuff for me. I come across lots of recipes that use them (thank you Isa Chandra Moskowitz!) and have never had any idea what they were or where to get them, and I’d given up looking. This time, I wasn’t even looking for them but they practically jumped off the shelf and hit me in the face.
This reminded me of all the ingredients I’d never used before I went vegan – and how much time I spent trying to figure out what they were, and then find them.
To help new and confused (particularly Australian) vegans, I thought it might be helpful to put together a list of the ingredients that stumped me.
So, if you don’t know your nooch from your Bragg’s, and have no idea where to start in finding besan flour or vital wheat gluten, this is the list for you!

A daggy middle-aged couple walk into the newest and grooviest restaurant in town. The place has been open less than a week, and it’s buzzing and packed full. They have no booking. All the tables are reserved. What happens next will amaze you!
[Did that sound enough like one of those silly social media articles trying its best to go viral?]
What actually happened was that the pair were welcomed, quickly found a couple of stools at the end of the bar, and had a great meal!
I had a mild panic tonight when I found myself accidentally cooking up a batch of seitan… Yikes! They all hate seitan. All that work and nobody was going to eat it.
Meat Free Week starts tomorrow. I know some people who are going to try it out – some trying meat-free and some vegetarians trying animal-product-free and I’m cheering them all on!
Yesterday was International Day of Happiness. Is this the first one? I’ve never even heard of it before, but I like it. Yes, I’m a day late, but I really want to slap up a quick post!

It seems like everyone’s talking about chickens lately! If you were in Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall a couple of weeks back, you might have seen the inaugural Melbourne Chicken Save rally. A few days later, Animals Australia launched their new campaign to raise awareness about factory farming of chickens, and finally, the chicks (do you like that?) at Our Hen House aired the first episode of their community/online TV show.

My cooking mojo has been a bit lacking lately. I’ve been trying out lots of weird recipes that I’ve never tried before, and many of them have been disappointing. On Thursday I really felt like a good meal that everyone would like.
I’ve ALWAYS had a sweet tooth, and chocolate has always been my biggest weakness. As a kid, I loved almost all chocolate bars (except Pollywaffles and Nudge bars), but my very favourite were Fry’s bars.
A lot of people seem to assume that vegan food has to be healthy. Ha! For me it’s just (OK, mostly just) about saving the animals.
